Online Review:
"The 2017 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Reserva Red Blend begins with abundant aromas of black fruit with a touch of green pepper, a little anise, and some licorice and chocolate notes. The wine tastes very smooth with soft tannins and flavors that mimic the nose with a bit more oak apparent, but there's still tons of rich fruit. It's quite a satisfying blend. On the long finish, the sweet fruit gives way to more spice, chocolate, and licorice. While there's quite a bit of sweetness on the palate and finish, it handles it well and does the very popular semi-sweet red blend style proud without feeling manufactured."
Wine Folly:
Pg. 91 - Camenere grapes - One of the grape varieties in the blend is known as a more herbally and peppercorn-flavored form of Merlot grape. It is known to be primarily in the nation of Chile for most of its production and its flavor profile is a perfect reflection of this. It makes for a great spicy flavoring of wine. It's best for roast meats.
Pg. 172 - Syrah grapes - Another grape variety I have yet to try, known for being very rich. It has origins in the Rhone Valley of France known for its significant body and moderately high tannin structure. It's known to be a meatier variety of red, with hints of blueberry, plum, and tobacco.
These grape varieties in combination with Cabernet Sauvignon allow for this wine to mix rich and spicy flavors while having the lightness of Cabernet Sauvignon that makes this wine delicious.
My Review:
I loved this Chilean red blend. It was absolutely phenomenal. In the past, I have had Chilean wine that I absolutely love but this took the cake. As wine folly described Camenere grapes and typical Chilean wine, it had a herbal peppery note that was really balanced out by the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. I love my spicy foods and so spicy wines are a kind I really enjoy. I tend not to like overly spicy things however so the contrast of the other blends was really nice. I have tried some other blends on the side as well and blends typically tend to go over well for me. The wine was very soft and rich while also being spicy and this made it easy to drink. I didn't pair it with anything but it did not need to be paired to be great. This is definitely one of my favorite wines I've reviewed yet and would highly recommend it if you enjoy spicy food items.
