Tasting - Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano D'abruzzo

Image
Name:  Cantina Zaccagnini  Variety: Montepulciano Region: Abruzzo Country: Italy Year: 2021 Price: $17.99 Store Review: "A rustic and easy drinking Italian Montepulciano wine! It's a clear deep purple color, with aromas of dark cherry, bramble, violets, and musty leather. Quite smooth on the palate, it is medium plus bodied, moderately acidic, with rich concentrated fruit, and nicely balanced. There are flavors of black plum, tart black cherry, dried herbs, lavender, and tobacco leaf. Moderate grippy tannins, and a dry, long finish. Serve with juicy smoked beef brisket with coleslaw." Wine Folly: pg.135 - Montalcino's red wines according to Wine Folly, are known for being high quality wines with an earthy flavor and smoky-sweet finish to its taste when made with care. I definitely picked up the earthy flavor of the wine but it did not have the smoky-sweet finish to it that I had hoped for.  pg. 248 - Montepulciano is a common variety in Italy and they are typicall...

Tasting - William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

Image
Name: William Hill Estate Winery Cabernet Sauvignon  Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon Red Region: Napa Valley, California Country: United States of America Year: 2021 Price: $15.99 Winery Review: " Rich with chocolate on the nose, mellowing out with time to present aromas of black currant and baking spice courtesy of oak aging. The palate makes good on what is promised on the initial passes, with a bold body full of dark plum, spice, and cocoa powder working together with decent tannins and good acidity. A nice one to enjoy during the weeknights with something fresh off the grill, whether it be burgers or Portobello mushrooms.  " (06/15/24) Wine Folly: pg. 88 - Wine Folly shows Cabernet Sauvignon as a wine with a significant body as well has high tannin content. This is certainly true for the William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon. Something the wine possesses that was mentioned in this page however was the rich chocolate flavors mentioned by the winery. I certainly noted this as well. L...

Tasting - Bogle Family Merlot

Image
Name: Vintage 2021 Bogle Family Vineyards Merlot California Variety: Merlot Region: Clarksburg County California  Country: USA Year: 2021 Price: $20 Winery Review: "In the glass, Bogle Merlot is dark garnet in color.  Some light does penetrate this wine and many red reflections shine through. Legs formed immediately upon swirling.  They were numerous, varying in size and fell slowly down the sides of the glass. This is a very aromatic wine.  The aroma is noticeable from far away and I picked up earth, tobacco and ripe black cherry.  I also noticed the aroma never faded and there was little to no whiff of alcohol. Bogle Merlot alcohol content 13.5%, per the bottle. The wine’s taste was very enjoyable.  Noted were flavors of bold dark cherry and other rich dark fruits.  There was also a hint of vanilla toast.  It’s a heavy Merlot, but not overly sweet.  It’s also quite smooth drinking." Wine Folly: It was quite evident that Tannins were p...

Opening Blog - Jonathan Yuhas

Image
Hi there! My name is Jonathan Yuhas. This will be my wine blog for the spring 2025 semester in Geography of Wine.  I have a little bit of personal experience when it comes to wine. Admittedly, my first experience with wine was sipping wine at church on Sundays along with communion bread. This was the extent of my experience with wine until I was about 13 years young. When I reached 13, my family and I went on a trip for Christmas to Italy. When I was in Italy, there were many points where I began to try glasses of wine with dinner. As a kid I thought wine was gross, even when it came directly from vineyards in Italy. Following my experience having wine in Italy, my parents every now and then would include a glass of wine with dinner. Now, at 21 years old, I've been trying it more and have really come around to it. I took this class so my understanding of wine could improve as well as my range of taste. I can't say for sure what types of wine it is that I really like. Ever si...
