Tasting - 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

Name: 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

Variety: 100% Sangiovese

Region: Chianti, Tuscany

Country: Italy

Year: 2017

Price: $81

Winery Review:

"Vibrant red in color. On the nose, intense and persistent; aromas of cherry and blackberry with floral notes - red roses, specifically. Dry with soft tannins and refined red fruits with a trace of mint on the mid-palate. Pairs well with traditional Italian foods, including pasta with tomato sauce as well as roast meats and aged cheeses."

Wine Folly:

pg. 248 - Wine varieties of Italy - Sangiovese is the main grape variety of Italy, this wine was created in the Mediterranean climate of Tuscany, red wines are known to shine and be considered top of the line rom this region because of the terroir of this region. Sangiovese is considered two of the highest quality varieties from this area as well as Montepulciano.

pg. 162 - Sangiovese in general - Sangiovese is Italy's most planted grape and the key variety in Chianti wine. It has a very sensitive taste that is very dependent on where it's grown. Sangiovese wines like this one are very acidic and go well with well-spiced foods like traditional Italian dishes. Known to "not get lost in the sauce".

My Review:

This was my first Chianti wine and it was absolutely delicious. It had chewy tannins with nice fruity notes of cherry and blackberry. I had this with a classic spaghetti and meatballs dish and the wine complimented the marinera sauce delightfully, as wine folly said, it paired the acidity of the wine exceptionally well with the sauce making for a spectacular meal. There was a recommendation to drink the wine after 2021, and here in 2025, I believe this was the right choice. 9.8/10.
